  • The NFF recently announced a list of players for the March International window
  • The squad list was notably without the name of an undersigned coach attached to it
  • A report on how Jose Peseiro compiled the team sheet for the friendlies has emerged

Jose Peseiro may have departed his role as coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, but the impact of the Portuguese coach is still being felt.

The 63-year-old, who announced his exit from the Nigerian team following the expiration of his contract, is reported to have played a significant role in the recently released team list for the friendly fixtures against Ghana and Mali.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) published a roster of 26 players for these friendlies without an assigned coach name, a move that has generated buzz across the country's footballing community.

However, a report from OwnGoalNigeria has stated that former coach, Peseiro, was responsible for the compilation of the list.

Peseiro responsible for Super Eagles squad list?

According to the report, the former Sporting CP coach compiled the list immediately after the conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The report highlighted that the Portuguese coach had hoped his contract talks with the Football Federation would be resolved quickly following the team's positive performance at the tournament. However, with both parties failing to agree on terms for a contract extension, the 63-year-old left his role as coach of the side.

Despite this, the list of players provided by the coach had already been handed over to the country's football federation, and it was subsequently published for the upcoming international window.

The friendlies will likely see Finidi George, assistant coach to Peseiro, lead the Super Eagles for the matches scheduled in Morocco.

Reports of the 52-year-old being in pole position to replace the departing Portuguese coach have continued gaining strength.

Super Eagles players back Peseiro’s assistant

In another report, Sports Brief stated that select players of Nigeria's Super Eagles have backed Finidi to replace Peseiro.

The 52-year-old served as an assistant to the Portuguese coach during his 22-month stint as coach of the Nigerian team.

The former Real Betis winger is among the individuals tipped to take over as coach of the Super Eagles after Peseiro exited.
