  • NFF has taken a new decision concerning Jose Peseiro's contract as Super Eagles coach
  • The Portuguese coach led Nigeria to a second-place finish at the 34th edition of AFCON
  • The former Saudi Arabia manager confirmed the number of offers he has on his table

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has taken a new decision over the contract situation of Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro after the AFCON 2023 outing.

The Portuguese manager led Nigeria to a second-place finish in the competition, losing 2-1 to Ivory Coast in the final.

The former FC Porto manager's contract ended at the end of the finals, and he met the clause of a semi-final finish in his previous deal.

According to Complete Sports, the 63-year-old agreed to a pay cut of €50,000 to €70,000 monthly before the AFCON, with reports claiming NFF is willing to pay the Portuguese the same amount to continue as Super Eagles coach.

In a recent interview, Peseiro confirmed that he has received at least seven offers after the AFCON final, and he intends to decide on his next coaching role in the coming days, according to the New Telegraph.

"I told everyone to come back at the end of the month. What is certain is that I want to continue coaching, and I need to choose wisely," the former Saudi Arabian national team coach said.

Peseiro's chances of being the next Algerian national team coach are all but gone as the Desert Foxes opt for the services of Bosnian manager Vladimir Petkovic.

The Portuguese coach has yet to decide if he will continue as Super Eagles manager, but the NFF are lining up a replacement if he decides not to continue.

Why Nigeria Must Retain Peseiro

Sports Brief earlier highlighted a few reasons why Nigeria should retain Peseiro as their national team coach.

The former Real Madrid assistant manager led the Super Eagles to its best finish at the AFCON since their 2013 triumph in South Africa.

The former FC Porto coach has effectively resolved the goalkeeping issues that have plagued the Nigerian team, with the emergence of Stanley Nwabali at the AFCON.
