  • Liverpool vs Man City clash ended in a 1-1 draw at Anfield
  • The Reds were denied what appeared like a clear penalty
  • John Stones and Mac Allister were on target for either side

Details have emerged as to why Liverpool were denied a penalty during their Premier League clash with Manchester City.

The two English heavyweights faced off in a thrilling encounter on Sunday, March 10, at Anfield.

The match was heavily touted to have a bearing on this season's title race, with the two teams locked in a three-horse race alongside Arsenal.

However, nothing could separate the teams after 90 minutes of action, as they eventually settled for a 1-1 draw.

John Stones opened the scoring for City in the 23rd minute before Alexis Mac Allister stepped up to equalise for Liverpool from the spot.

An incident involving Jeremy Doku and Mac Allister late into the second half became a huge talking point, with the Reds' camp contending they should have been awarded a penalty.

According to The Mirror, Doku appeared to catch Allister with a high boot in added time, sparking penalty calls.

However, neither on-field referee Michael Oliver nor VAR Stuart Attwell awarded a spot kick.

Why Liverpool were not awarded a penalty

Sky Sports reports that the decision not to award the penalty was because it was deemed that Doku played the ball.

According to the publication, Attwell viewed that the Belgian's foot was in a reasonable position while clearing the ball.

Former referee Mike Dean was among the high-profile people in football who delved into the subject.

Dean said:

"I think he's touched the ball Doku but with the follow through he's caught him right in the chest. I think it could be a penalty."

Walker backs Liverpool in title race

Earlier, Sports Brief also reported on Manchester City defender, Kyle Walker, saying he would rather see Liverpool win the Premier League ahead of Arsenal.

City, the Reds, and the Gunners are all firmly in the title race, with the three clubs interchanging the top three spots as the campaign builds to its finish.
