  • Wayne Rooney has delivered a poignant message to Man United
  • He made a bold claim about his ex-club after win against Everton
  • United are currently in a three-horse race to finish in top four places

Club legend Wayne Rooney delivered a blunt assessment of Manchester United's current situation following their hard-fought 2-0 victory over Everton.

The Red Devils struggled in their match against the Toffees, and Rooney suggested that they were fortunate to secure all three points on Saturday.

Despite the win, United's performance left much to be desired, with their reliance on two first-half penalties from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford to secure the victory, per Eurosport.

Where are United in the top four race?

While the result provided a temporary respite from recent disappointments, Erik ten Hag's charges find themselves in sixth place in the Premier League table.

They trail Tottenham Hotspur by three points, with Spurs having played two fewer games, and are eight points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Rooney casts doubt over United's top 4 ambitions

The former England international expressed his belief that Villa and Spurs have the upper hand in the race for Champions League qualification, casting a shadow over United's prospects for securing a top-four finish.

“I don’t think Manchester United will make the top four because they have to almost win every game," he told TNT Sports, as quoted by the Daily Post.

Explaining why his former club would not make the top four, Rooney pointed to the club's inconsistent results as their bane and what would be their Achilles heel in the race for top four places.

“I think they’re a team that are very inconsistent, and I can’t see them winning every game, so I think it’s going to be very difficult.
He added: “Today [On Saturday], I think it was 20-odd chances against them, but there were no clear-cut chances for Everton. But it’s too many. There are too many gaps. It’s too easy for teams to get opportunities against them.”

Supercomuputer predicts United's top four chances

In a related report, Sports Brief highlighted a recent attempt by a supercomputer to forecast Manchester United's season's outcome based on their performance.

While it appears unlikely for United to contend for the title, the focus for the 13-time Premier League champions has turned to securing a spot in the Champions League.

However, an Opta analyst cautioned that achieving this goal might prove challenging for United if they continue to display the inconsistency witnessed thus far.
