  • Manchester United lost their 10th Premier League match
  • Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi scored as Fulham beat Man United 2-1
  • Marco Silva has hailed the two Nigerian stars who just returned from AFCON

Alex Iwobi etched his name in the history books after scoring a last-gasp winner for Fulham in their Premier League clash against Manchester United on Saturday, February 24.

His compatriot Calvin Bassey had scored the opener for Marco Silva's team, but they needed a late winner after allowing the hosts to equalise.

Marco Silva hailed the two Nigerian stars who returned to the club after their painful defeat in the 2023 AFCON final.

The Nigerian international missed a few golden opportunities during the game but scored when it mattered most.

Bassey gave the visitors the lead after 65 minutes. The defender scored a loose ball from a corner, his first-ever goal for Fulham.

After the goal, Man United upped the ante and were rewarded with a goal. Bernd Leno parried Bruno Fernandes's powerful shot to Harry Maguire's path. The centre-back tapped into an open net.

With United pushing for a winner, Fulham went on the counterattack, resulting in Iwobi's well-taken goal.

Marco Silva on Iwobi, Bassey

After a painful ending to Nigeria's 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Iwobi is back to enjoying his football again.

The 27-year-old was delighted after scoring a 97th-minute winner for Fulham.

“I’m over the moon right now, to win at Old Trafford in the last minute is crazy, there’s no better feeling.”
“We feel like we performed really well, we’ve been performing well recently, and today is a step in the right direction and hopefully, we can kick on from there.”

Silva showered his two stars with praise after the victory.

“The two players [Bassey and Iwobi] that were at the Africa Cup [of Nations]. And that we miss them,” Silva said via Complete Sports.
“They were decisive in terms of the goals. It just shows how they are important for us in the way I want to play, in our way.
“It is really nice to see both scoring goals and helping us to win.”

Bassey, Iwobi sink Manchester United

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Bassey and Iwobi were Fulham's heroes as they defeated Manchester United in front of a sell-out crowd at Old Trafford.

The Nigerian stars recently returned from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where they were disappointed to lose 2-1 in the final to host Ivory Coast following an excellent competition.

It was head coach Marco Silva's first Premier League win away at Old Trafford, and he did so with a thrilling late winner.
