  • The Super Eagles of Nigeria are still in search of a new coach since the departure of Jose Peseiro
  • The three-time African champions failed to convince the Portuguese manager to sign a new deal
  • A former Barcelona player has confirmed that he has applied for the Nigerian head coaching post

The Nigerian national team are currently without a coach after Jose Peseiro decided not to continue after a second-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The former Real Madrid assistant coach led the Super Eagles to the final of the competition where they lost 2-1 to the host nation, Ivory Coast.

Despite the country's performance in the tournament, Peseiro did not sign a contract extension, which has now left the Super Eagles coaching role vacant.

As talk continues to build over who would next manage Nigeria's national team, a legendary figure could assume the responsibility.

Sports journalist, Osasu Obayiuwana, posted on his official handle on X (formerly Twitter) that former Barcelona star, Emmanuel Amuneke, confirmed that he has applied for the Super Eagles vacant coaching job.

"Yes, I did [apply to be the next manager]," the Super Eagles legend reportedly said.

The former Nigerian international's move to apply for the job stirred reactions from fans on social media.

@digyoris said:

"Of all the indigenous coaches, he is most experienced for the job. Plus, he brought Osimhen and Chukwueze up. I think he can also get the best out of Nwakali, we need a playmaker."

@brezzada said:

"Amuneke has worked with some of the players in the Super Eagles team and he could be the perfect replacement for Jose Peseiro. He can have either Samson Siasia or Finidi George as his assistant if he eventually gets the job."

@PLATO2019 said:

"He and siasia shud take charge"

"Let's go!"

Nigerian coaches to replace Peseiro

Sports Brief earlier highlighted a list of Nigerian coaches who could replace Peseiro as the new Super Eagles manager.

Among them was Amuneke, Austin Eguavoen, and several other tactically astute local managers and former Nigerian players.

Peseiro announced that he was stepping down as the West African country's national team coach after his contract expired.
