  • Chelsea risk breaching financial guidelines due to the club's bloated wage bill
  • The Premier League is tightening the belt on profit and sustainability rules
  • Everton were recently deducted points for allegedly flouting the guidelines

Chelsea could be forced to offload tons of players ahead of the upcoming window transfer in a bid to avoid a possible breach of the Financial Fair Play guidelines.

The Blues have splashed huge amounts of money on new signings since the arrival of Todd Boehly, who succeeded Roman Abramovich as the club's new owner in 2022.

According to ESPN, the west Londoners have spent in the north of €1 billion under Boehly across three transfer windows.

Mykhailo Mudryk and Cole Palmer top the list of players the Stamford Bridge dwellers have signed over the period.

Palmer, who joined the club from rivals Manchester City, was Chelsea's 25th signing since the summer of 2022.

However, the spending spree has not had an impact on their performance, with the Mauricio Pochettino-tutored side currently struggling for results.

Last Sunday, Chelsea suffered a Carabao Cup final heartbreak against Liverpool, with Gary Neville branding them 'blue billion-pound bottle jobs.'

Chelsea could be forced into a firesale

The Premier League is tightening the belt on profit and sustainability rules, with Everton recently falling victim to the guidelines.

The Toffees were initially docked 10 points after they were found guilty of allegedly flouting the guidelines.

While the punishment was reduced to six points after a successful appeal, the Premier League is expected to implement the rules for the latter in the coming months.

Such a scenario will leave clubs, including Chelsea, with no choice but to get rid of several players in order to balance their books.

Which players could Chelsea offload?

According to The Telegraph, the west Londoners may have to desperately sell players in the summer to raise at least £100 million.

It is believed as many as seven players could be shipped out in the process, with Lewis Hall and Romelu Lukaku among those who could be shipped out.

Others include Ian Maatsen, who is on loan at Borussia Dortmund, Conor Gallagher, and Trevoh Chalobah.

Armando Broja and Marc Cucurella are also facing a similar fate, with the latter arguably one of the biggest flops brought in by Boehly.
