Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has weighed in on the German Bundesliga title race, offering his perspective on Bayer Leverkusen's chances of securing the championship this season.

Guardiola, a serial winner with three Bundesliga titles under his belt during his tenure at Bayern Munich, believes that Leverkusen, led by his former protege Xabi Alonso, are heavy favourites to win the league this campaign.

However, he suggests that, despite currently topping the league table, Leverkusen may falter in their pursuit of the championship.

Leverkusen's impressive Bundesliga title charge

Leverkusen currently tops the Bundesliga standings with an impressive 61 points from 23 matches, boasting an eight-point lead over perennial champions, Bayern Munich.

Under Alonso's leadership, they are the sole undefeated team in Germany and across Europe's top five leagues, having recently set a German record with a 33-game unbeaten streak across all competitions, according to FOX Sports.

Besides Bayern, Leverkusen are the most prolific team in the league, scoring 59 goals at an average of 2.56 goals per game while also maintaining the best defensive record, conceding just 16 goals so far.

Guardiola cautious about Leverkusen's Bundesliga aspirations

Despite their commanding position, Pep remains cautious about Leverkusen's chances of dethroning Bayern.

Renowned for his tactical acumen and football philosophy, the 53-year-old acknowledges Alonso's commendable efforts in challenging Bayern for the league title.

He also praised Die Werkself for maintaining their enviable, unbeaten record at this stage of the season.

"Wow! The job he is doing is fantastic. The only team unbeaten and fighting with Bayern. Now, it’s the most important part of the season," Guardiola said as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

Why Leverkusen 'cannot win' Bundesliga, Pep explains

Despite receiving abundant praise for Xabi, who has garnered interest from several top European clubs such as Liverpool and Bayern, Guardiola elucidated why Leverkusen might struggle to secure the title.

"They cannot win the Bundesliga. They can lose because everybody thinks it’s done!"

Alonso addresses Leverkusen future

Sports Brief also reported that Xabi Alonso addressed speculation about potential moves to Liverpool and Bayern Munich on Friday, dismissing them as mere rumours.

He emphasised his commitment to Bayer Leverkusen amid an impressive campaign, where he aims to lead the record-breaking team to their first Bundesliga title.

The German top flight team's remarkable success has drawn attention from various top European clubs, including Alonso's two former teams, Liverpool and Bayern.
