  • The Portuguese's sacking came at a time when the club was sitting ninth
  • However, they have since climbed to sixth in the standings under De Rossi

Italian giants have seemingly hit the ground running since they got rid of Jose Mourinho as manager.

Mourinho was sacked by Roma just two weeks into the New Year, with the club replacing him with Daniele De Rossi.

According to Sky Sports, the Portuguese's sacking came after two-and-a-half years in charge of Roma.

The veteran boss was handed his marching orders following a string of poor results that had seen The Giallorossi record just one win in six Serie A games.

At the time, Roma were sitting ninth in the Serie A standings, a massive 22 points behind the league leaders.

How Roma have fared since Mourinho's exit

De Rossi has been in charge of Roma in nine matches across competitions since his arrival, with the club legend winning six of those.

The former midfielder's first game in charge ended in a 2-1 win over Verona in the Serie A on January 20 before beating Saudi giants Al-Shabab in a club friendly four days later.

De Rossi's charges stunned Salernitana 2-1 at the end of January, following up the victory with a 4-0 huge win over Cagliari on February 5.

Roma's only setback so far came against League leaders Inter Milan on February 10, where they lost 4-2 at home.

The Stadio Olimpico-based side went on to qualify for the Round of 16 of the Europa League after beating Feyenoord 4-2 on penalties. The two teams tied 2-2 on aggregate in a two-legged affair.

In between, Roma demolished Frosinone 3-0 away from home, with their latest outing ending in a 3-2 victory over Torino on Monday night, February 26.

The match saw Paulo Dybala net his first hat-trick for Roma, per The Washington Post, as Duvan Zapata and Dean Hujsen's own goal earned Torino the consolations.

The victory has De Rossi's side sitting sixth on the Serie A standings with 44 points, just four points off fourth-placed Bologna.

They will be hoping to continue with their impressive form on Saturday, March 2, when they take on Monza in the Italian top-flight.

Mourinho's tenure at Roma

Mourinho's time at Roma was a mixed bag.

While the 60-year-old delivered much-needed silverware, he left the club in a state of flux as questions emerged of long-term strategy and playing style.

His greatest highlight at the club was when he helped them win the inaugural Europa Conference League in 2022.

He also led them to the final of the Europa League in 2023, where they lost to Sevilla.

Mourinho a perfect candidate for Chelsea job

Earlier, Sports Brief analysed why Mourinho is the ideal candidate to replace Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea.

There are growing calls for Pochettino to be relieved of his duties by the fans, and it could happen sooner or later if results don't improve.

Fans have suggested many names to replace him, while the media have also linked different names to the role.
