  • Kylian Mbappe is one of the most recognisable football players, but that wasn't always the case
  • The France captain once played for AS Monaco, where he scored his first Champions League goal
  • Mbappe's first goal in the continental tournament led to a hilarious case of mistaken identity

Kylian Mbappe has scored 44 goals in the Champions League and has no plans to stop anytime soon.

The Paris Saint-Germain attacker is one of the best players in the world, but when he scored his first UCL goal, not even the stadium announcers remembered his name.

talkSPORT recently recalled how Mbappe was called by another player’s name after netting his first goal in the UCL for Monaco.

Mbappe’s first Champions League goal

Only 18 at the time, Mbappe broke his duck in the competition with a goal against Manchester City in 2017.

He scored in the return leg as well, as Monaco dumped City out of the tournament at the Round of 16 stage. The French star ran onto a ball over the top of the defence before firing past Willy Caballero.

He then wheeled away in celebration before the announcer made a hilarious mistake.

Announcer confuses Mbappe with Sidibe

While highlights of the goal were flashed on televisions, the announcer’s voice broke over the noise of the fans.

"Goal for AS Monaco, scored by number 19, Djibril Sidibe," it said.

Who was Djibril Sidibe?

Sidibe was a right-back for the French club who wore the number 19 jersey. He and Mbappe spent two years together at the Ligue 1 side before the latter moved to PSG.

The right-back then had a brief spell in the English Premier League with Everton, but now plies his football in Greece with AEK Athens, Transfermarkt confirmed.

Why Kylian Mbappe was spotted in Barcelona

Sports Brief also reported on Kylian Mbappe being spotted in Barcelona, causing quite a stir.

The French attacker, who was with Achraf Hakimi, signed autographs for fans at the airport.

His sighting gave fans hope that he would snub Real Madrid for a move to the Catalan club.
