Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez helped Inter Miami kick off their 2024 Major League Soccer season with a 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake, and they reflected on the victory.

The Argentine assisted Robert Taylor for the opener, sliding a pass through to the Finnish striker to score the first MLS goal of the season with a powerful strike.

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner was a menace throughout the game and got a hand in the third goal; he drove the ball from midfield before passing to Suarez, who immediately released Diego Gomez for the second goal.

The captain completed the game while the debutant was substituted on the stroke of 90 minutes and replaced by Ecuadorian forward, Leonardo Campana.

Both men shared messages on their Instagram pages celebrating their first win of the season.

On his reunion with Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, Suarez told MLS Season Pass:

“I’m so happy because it was the first game and winning at home is really important. We’re still friends inside the pitch and outside the pitch. We try our best to help the team.”

The Uruguayan, who is struggling with a knee problem, was seen limping in the final moments of the game, but Martino, during his post-match conference, dismissed any idea of resting him for the trip to California against LA Galaxy on Sunday.

Suarez shares ‘mate’ with Messi

Sports Brief reported on Suarez sharing mate tea with Messi as they arrived at the Chase Stadium for their first league game of the season, their first together in 921 days.

Mate is a native South American herb tea, which the World Cup winner is seen with every time he arrives at a game. The former Liverpool star filled the flask with water before passing it to his friend.
