  • Erling Haaland has been told he would struggle with Liverpool's style of play
  • Mark Goldbridge believes the striker would not start ahead of Darwin Nunez
  • Meanwhile, the Norwegian has 21 goals in 28 games across all competitions

Manchester City's prolific goal scorer, Erling Haaland, received a blunt assessment of his chances to secure a spot in Liverpool's starting lineup.

The former Borussia Dortmund hitman broke his mini-goal drought with a crucial strike against Brentford on Tuesday night, securing a narrow victory for City with his lone goal in the Premier League encounter.

His goal against the Bees marked his achievement of scoring against all 21 clubs he has faced in the English top flight since joining the Citizens from the Bundesliga at the start of last season, per Livescore.

Despite his impressive goal-scoring record, critics have questioned Haaland's suitability away from Man City, with football pundit, Mark Goldbridge, suggesting the 23-year-old would struggle for a place in Jurgen Klopp's starting XI.

"I think right now, Jurgen Klopp would not start Erling Haaland for Liverpool," the pundit said on his Saves Football podcast, as quoted by Daily Post.

Despite acknowledging the former Dortmund ace as the best striker in the box, Goldbridge maintained that Haaland would not suit Liverpool's style of play.

"I actually think Haaland is the best striker, penalty box striker in the world. But the way Liverpool plays, I don’t think Jurgen Klopp would give up a Darwin Nunez, a Jota, a Salah or a Diaz for an Erling Haaland.
"I think it would completely disrupt the way they play. The number nine for Liverpool is not really the focal point of the team," Goldbridge concluded.

Real Madrid reportedly show interest in Haaland

While Goldbridge believes the Man City ace might face challenges fitting into Liverpool's system, there's speculation that the Norwegian striker could become the next superstar signing for Real Madrid, Sports Brief reported.

The Spanish giants have reportedly renewed their interest in Haaland after his outstanding debut season in England, during which he played a crucial role in securing a European treble with an impressive 52 goals in total.

Reports have also suggested that there's a release clause in the Man City star's current contract that allows teams outside of England to trigger it in the summer of 2024, despite his current deal running until 2027.
