  • Victor Osimhen is a target for many top European clubs
  • The Napoli striker is the African Footballer of the Year
  • Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro says he can thrive in top clubs like Barcelona

Victor Osimhen's future at Napoli has been a subject of speculation for months.

Despite signing a new deal last year, Osimhen will reportedly exit Napoli in the summer, and several top clubs in Europe have been mentioned as possible destinations.

Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro has said one Spanish club is "perfect" for the African Footballer of the Year.

Osimhen was criticised for his subpar performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which Nigeria lost in the final.

Earlier this week, PSG shortlisted Osimhen as a potential transfer after Kylian Mbappe informed the club he will leave the club in the summer, per the Athletic.

The Nigerian superstar joined the Italian giants in 2020 from Lille and has scored 67 goals in 119 appearances. His performances last season helped Napoli win their first Serie A title in 33 years.

The striker is enjoying a poor 2023/24 campaign so far, which has coincided with Napoli's poor title defence. They find themselves 9th in the table after 24 matches. They are 27 points off the top.

Jose Peseiro on Osimhen's next club

The Portuguese coach recently said Barcelona would be the best club for the Nigerian star to join.

“I think he can play for any team in the world,” Peseiro told Spanish publication, Sport.
“I’m not going to say one to avoid speculation. He is an animal when it comes to pressing, very good with his head, in the area, and with his eye, which he also associates."

Osimhen's style of play, Peseiro says, does not fit with Barcelona's tiki-taka style but, with Elring Haaland thriving at Manchester City, the Nigerian would be fine at Barcelona or any big club.

“Of course, he doesn’t associate like other Barça players, but City also looked for associative football and went for Haaland."
“Aren’t City winning? Isn’t Erling scoring goals? Osimhen is a player to play for Barça, Madrid, or another."

Osimhen comments on his future

Sports Brief earlier reported on Osimhen addressing his future with Napoli.

The striker said he knows what his next step will be. When the season ends it remains to be seen where the striker will land. Chelsea, Arsenal, and Real Madrid have been linked with the Nigerian.

"Since I’ve started, I’ve been the one making my own decisions on everything and it’s working out well for me. I already know the next step I want to take so, for now, I just want to finish the season strong."
