  • Neymar's former penalty routine prompted FIFA to revise regulations regarding run-ups
  • The Brazilian previously employed a feint just before striking the ball to gain an advantage
  • The ex-Paris Saint-Germain star has successfully converted 74 penalties out of 91 attempts

Al-Hilal superstar, Neymar, has long been regarded as one of the premier penalty-takers globally, demonstrating his prowess for quite some time.

The Brazilian icon once deployed a deceptive move just before striking the ball, aiming to gain an edge over the opposition goalkeeper.

Traditionally clinical from the penalty spot, the 32-year-old has attempted 91 penalties in his career, converting 74 of them, as reported by Transfermarkt.

Despite encountering 14 misses throughout his professional journey, Neymar's penalty technique typically exudes composure.

He adopts a methodical approach, carefully observing the goalkeeper's movements before selecting his target at the last possible moment.

Neymar's bizarre penalty technique

However, Neymar's penalty style underwent a significant transformation in the past.

During his tenure with Santos in Brazil, the former PSG forward employed a distinct strategy for spot kicks, which stirred controversy to the extent that even FIFA, the global football governing body, was compelled to revise the regulations.

He implemented a strategy wherein he halted his motion just before striking the ball. Predictably, many goalkeepers would commit to a dive, allowing the former Barcelona phenom to calmly roll the ball into the opposite corner.

Neymar's first-ever spot kick at the senior level came against Aranha in a Brazilian league game in August 2010, with the forward going on to score in the 2-0 win.

FIFA prohibited Neymar's penalty technique

As Neymar's strategy appeared to yield results, FIFA closely monitored his penalty-taking approach. They then deemed his method unfair to goalkeepers and made a significant decision to alter it in 2010.

Any players employing this technique from the 2010/11 season onward would face cautionary measures, per FIFA's 'Amendments to the Laws of the Game' document.

How Neymar fared at Santos

At the tender age of 17, Neymar made his professional debut on March 7, 2009, entering the field in the second half of Santos' victorious 2-1 encounter against Oeste, per Ghanasoccernet.

Merely a week later, he netted his debut senior goal against Mogi Mirim, marking the inception of his illustrious journey in football.

During his inaugural season with the club, the Brazilian prodigy showcased his scoring prowess by bagging 10 goals in 33 appearances.

Neymar's tenure with Santos spanned 142 matches, during which he found the back of the net 73 times, before making a high-profile move to La Liga outfit Barcelona in 2013.

Neymar to quit Al-Hilal?

Sports Brief also previously reported when renowned football journalist, Fabrizio Romano clarified Neymar’s club situation at Al-Hilal.

He has clarified the forward's contract was not terminated, with his name only omitted from their registered squad owing to his injury.

Neymar's contractual agreement with the side extends until June 2025, but he has hardly featured after getting hurt while on Brazil duty.
