  • Mohamed Salah has yet to win an international trophy for Egypt
  • The winger has won every possible trophy for his club Liverpool
  • Egyptian legend Hossam Mido has hit out at the Premier League star

Mohamed Salah is receiving more heat from Egypt after the country's embarrassing campaign at the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Salah missed the last Group B game against Cape Verde and the knockout loss to DR Congo after limping off in the first half of the 2-2 draw against Ghana with a hamstring injury.

After suffering the injury, it was initially reported that the winger would leave camp and return to England for rehabilitation, a move which was met with fierce criticism. He stayed on for the final group game but not for the knockout game.

Mido queries Salah's leadership

Egyptian legend Hossam Mido was unimpressed and slammed the Premier League star for lack of leadership.

“Is Messi as a leader for Argentina like Salah as a leader for Egypt? Salah is Egypt’s star but does what he does with the national team resemble what Messi does with Argentina?” he said on Untold Podcast.
“Does Salah do what Ronaldo does with Portugal? Directing players in penalty kicks, saying who will take the shot and who will follow, and imposing his personality on everyone.”

The former Tottenham forward backed his point with the fact that his compatriot was overlooked for captaincy at the club side, while Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold were selected.

“Salah has evolved mentally, but he has never been a leader on the pitch, the evidence for that is why he didn’t get the captain’s armband at Liverpool. Ask yourself why Salah has never worn the captain’s armband for Liverpool. Don’t say it’s because he’s a foreign player, as this is not a factor in English football, and there is ample evidence,” he added.
“Salah was negatively affected by becoming the captain of Egypt. He would have had more freedom and less pressure if he remained without that armband.”

Mido is not the only Egypt legend to come out and publicly slam Salah over his leadership or lack thereof as, Ahmed Hassan, did the same, shunning the forward for leaving the Pharaoh's camp in the middle of the tournament.

The former Chelsea star's injury timeline was estimated to be 28 days, and per Goal, Jurgen Klopp said he is right on track and could join training next week, though he has been running on the grass for almost two weeks.

Ahmed Hassan slams Salah

Sports Brief reported on Ahmed Hassan slamming Salah for leaving the national team camp after suffering an injury in the second group game at AFCON.

The legendary midfielder claimed the former Basel forward should not have left even if he had one leg because he is the captain.
