  • Kaizer Chiefs and the rest of the DStv Premiership must wait until the weekend to play again
  • Bafana Bafana surprised South Africa by earning a bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations
  • Fans have accused the league of not having foresight by scheduling games so near the AFCON

Bafana Bafana's welcome success has put the DStv Premiership on ice for a few more days.

The league decided to postpone the midweek resumption of fixtures so that the nation could focus its attention on the returning heroes.

Hugo Broos' men have reignited a love of the national team and they will fittingly return to Johannesburg on Valentine's Day.

League organisers announced that they had received communication from the camp in Ivory Coast that they would be arriving later than expected.

Ronwen Williams' penalty heroics against Cape Verde meant South Africa were guaranteed to stay for the conclusion of the tournament, making the postponement inevitable.

The DStv Premiership will now restart on Friday, February 16, with SuperSport United's clash with Stellenbosch FC, before five matches the following day.

South Africa's squad is made up mainly of Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates players, with a sprinkling of SuperSport United, Amazulu and Stellenbosch FC representatives.

Fans were quick to ask why Kaizer Chiefs could not play, considering they have an uninterrupted squad.

@CAFCLorNothing@Mashh__ suggested:

"But Chiefs must play. They don’t have anyone representing them at AFCON."

@QRoger_03 added:

"Who are KaizerChiefs missing from their camp? I mean all their players were sitting at home watching the AFCON, they should be playing as no one is missing from them."

@kabelomolekwa6 suggested Chiefs fans might be bitter, posting:

"Since this AFCON 2023 started Kaizer Chiefs never wished Bafana Bafana any luck why."

Several X users blamed the postponement on the league's organisers not having faith in Bafana Bafana. @5502Zakes summed up the sentiment, posting:

"So Psl didn't have confidence in Bafana Bafana reaching this stage of the tournament, they scheduled matches just immediately after AFCON yhoo talk about unpatriotic approach."

Is Sundowns' success homegrown?

Sports Brief also recently compiled a list of the origins of Mamelodi Sundowns' current squad.

Masandawana are the undisputed leaders of South African football on the field and financially.

The club has unrivalled purchasing power and has handpicked the Premiership's best players.
