  • Jose Mourinho has named Lionel Messi as a player he wished to coach
  • Two of the greatest football personalities have never worked together
  • The Special One also made a bold comment about the Inter Miami star

Jose Mourinho would have loved to coach Lionel Messi, claiming it would be an honour to have the Argentine superstar in his squad.

Messi is arguably the greatest player of all time, cementing his legacy after winning the only silverware missing from his cabinet - the World Cup in Qatar in December 2022.

Mourinho is one of the greatest managers of all time, winning at all clubs he has managed, including AS Roma, with Tottenham Hotspur the only club he coached and never won a trophy with.

If you mention the top five football personalities in the last 20 years, those two names will be on the list, exemplifying how accomplished they have been as a player and a manager respectively.

Mourinho makes bold claim about Messi

The Special One was relieved of his duties by Roma last month. In his first public interview since then, he named Messi as the player he would like to coach.

"A player I'd have liked to coach? For example, I never got to train Lionel Messi, but then nobody can train Messi. It is absurd to think you could coach him because he was born with everything and already knows everything," Mourinho told Ohm.
"He might teach you some things... All you could say is that you had the honour of having him in your squad," he added.

The former Chelsea boss has been close to managing Messi twice. Per Marca, Barcelona were close to appointing the Portuguese in 2008, but Johan Cruyff vetoed hiring Pep Guardiola instead.

Per Sky Sports, the former Real Madrid boss was close to having the Argentine in his squad 2014. He had convinced him to come to Chelsea, but his father, Jorge Messi, blocked the deal.

Why Messi has more Ballon d'Or

Sports Brief previously reported on Mourinho explaining why Messi won more Ballon d'Or than Cristiano Ronaldo during his time at Real Madrid.

The two Portuguese icons worked together in Madrid, and it was the best goal-scoring era of Ronaldo’s career, with more goals than games played.
