  • One of four managers at AFCON 2023 will have a chance to win their first-ever trophy
  • Only Hugo Bross has won the AFCON trophy before after guiding Cameroon in 2017
  • We take a look at the trophies the remaining coaches in Ivory Coast have won in their careers

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations started with 24 teams and has now been whittled down with only eight teams remaining to battle it out for glory.

Only 180 minutes, or slightly more, separate two quarter-finalists from a place in the February 11 final at the Alassane Outtarra stadium.

Previous title-winning coaches Aliou Cisse and Djamel Belmadi have already exited the tournament, same as World Cup semi-finalist Walid Regragui.

5. Kaba Diawara (Guinea), Emerse Fae (Ivory Coast), Eric Chelle (Mali), Bubista (Cape Verde) - zero trophies

Guinea head coach Kaba Diawara led a successful playing career, winning Ligue 1 with Bordeaux, among other trophies. He ventured into coaching in 2021 and is yet to win a trophy.

Emerse Fae was thrown into the deep end after the Ivorian federation sacked Jean-Louis Gasset in the middle of the tournament. Fae stepped in with his first match as a manager, a baptism by fire against the defending champions, Senegal. Can he win his first trophy in his first stab at management?

Eric Chelle had three stints with amateur French clubs without much success before taking over Les Aigles in 2022.

Pedro Bubista has been in charge of Cape Verde since 2020 after managing a couple of clubs in the island nation but has no known trophies in his cabinet.

4. Pedro Soares Gonçalves (Angola) - one trophy

The Portuguese head coach has a long history of working with academy and youth players. It is therein that he claimed the only trophy of his career when he led the Angolan U-17 side to victory in the 2018 COSAFA Cup.

3. Jose Peseiro (Nigeria) - two trophies

Peseiro might only be third on this list but guiding Sporting CP to the UEFA Cup (now Europa League) final in 2005 is a significant achievement in his career.

He won the Egyptian Premier League with Al-Ahly in 2016, three years after winning a domestic cup with Braga.

2. Sebastien Desabre (DR Congo) - five trophies

The French tactician required no re-introduction to African football. He has won top-flight titles in Ivory Coast (2), Cameroon, Tunisia and Angola.

1. Hugo Broos (South Africa) - ten trophies

For starters, he is the only remaining manager remaining who has tasted AFCON glory before. He will be aiming to become the second manager, after Herve Renard, to win the trophy with two different national teams.

Before his success with Cameroon in 2017, the 71-year-old enjoyed a successful managerial career in his native Belgium. He coached Club Brugge and Anderlecht, winning three top-flight titles and six domestic cups.

Only trophies won in top-flight leagues of the countries have been included here.

Why AFCON 2023 is Nigeria's to lose

Sports Brief has also reported why Nigeria are now AFCON 2023 favourites. The Super Eagles have seen pre-tournament hot-shots Senegal and Morocco exit in dramatic circumstances.

Victor Osimhen has been impeccable for Jose Peseiro despite missing big chances with the resolute defence also contributing to their success so far.
