  • Nigeria are looking to reach the semi-final of the 2023 AFCON when they face Angola
  • The Super Eagles eliminated bitter rivals Cameroon in the Round of 16
  • Ademola Lookman scored both goals against Cameroon and says Nigeria can be better

Nigeria are on top of the world following their incredible 2-0 win over arch-rivals Cameroon in the Round of 16 at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Their hero, Ademola Lookman, has fired a warning to Angola ahead of the quarter-final clash later this week.

The Super Eagles have performed well since the tournament kicked off earlier this month. They have won all but one game so far.

In all four games, they have conceded just once. The goal came in their opening game against Equatorial Guinea.

Ademola Lookman scored twice in their Round of 16 game against the Indomitable Lions and believes his side can still play better.

“We’ve not reached our best yet. Definitely as a squad, we have gotten better as the competition has gone on, and we hope to continue that way,” per Soccernet.ng.

They will come up against a dangerous Angolan side in the quarter-final. The Palancas Negras have scored nine goals in the competition and Gelson Dala and Mabululu have scored seven of them.

AFCON favourites update

With Senegal out of the tournament, the Opta supercomputer have disclosed the new favourite to win the competition.

Three-time AFCON champions Nigeria are now favourites to lift the title with a 25.2% chance. The Super Eagles are having a great tournament. They could face Morocco, Cape Verde, and South Africa if they go through, as Sports Brief reported earlier.

Morocco are second in the favourites table with a 17.2% chance, while hosts Ivory Coast have a 15.8% chance.

Peseiro wary of Angola

Sports Brief also reported on coach Jose Peseiro explaining why Nigeria are taking Angola seriously.

"We must take this opponent seriously, so we will continue to sleep early and eat pasta," he laughed. "Jokes aside, all the teams at this stage are capable of winning the tournament."

Angola thrashed Namibia 3-0 in the Round of 16 after a chaotic first half where their goalkeeper was shown a straight red card.
