  • The Lions of Teranga were favourites to defend their title
  • A supercomputer has named a new favourite to lift the title

The early weeks of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations have been intriguing.

Defending champions Senegal were knocked out by hosts Ivory Coast who needed a miracle to reach the Round of 16.

With the Lions of Teranga out of the tournament, Opta Supercomputer has a new favourite to win the title.

Opta Supercomputer named Senegal the overwhelming favourite to win the title days before the competition kicked off, with a 12.8% chance.

Hosts Ivory Coast were given a 12.1% chance to win the trophy on home soil, but their campaign was at risk of crumbling after an embarrassing 4-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea.

2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco were given an 11.1% chance of winning, and they've lived up to their reputation so far. Nigeria had an 8.0% chance.

North African giants Algeria and Egypt rounded up the top five, but both have been eliminated from the tournament. Algeria failed to get out of the group stages for the second time in a row, while Egypt lost to DR Congo in the Round of 16.

Cape Verde booked their quarter-final spot after beating Mauritania. The Blue Sharks were given a 0.9% chance of winning the tournament. Southern African side Angola will meet Nigeria in the quarter-final. They had a 0.5% chance.

Opta AFCON prediction update

With Senegal now out of the competition, Opta Supercomputer have released an updated list of favourites to win.

Three-time AFCON champions Nigeria are now favourites to lift the title with a 25.2% chance. The Super Eagles are having a great tournament.

They have conceded just one goal and face underdogs Angola in the last eight. They could face Morocco, Cape Verde, and South Africa if they go through.

The Atlas Lions are second in the favourites table with a 17.2% chance, while hosts Ivory Coast have a 15.8% chance.

Song backs Nigeria to win AFCON

Sports Brief earlier reported on Cameroon coach Rigobert Song backing Nigeria to lift the 2023 AFCON title after the Super Eagles eliminated the Indomitable Lions from the tournament.

Nigeria have not lost any match in the competition, and they are capable of against giants Ivory Coast and Cameroon.

“Nigeria have always been a favourite and I think they have the quality to win the competition," said Song.
