  • Hughton was sacked after another group stage exit at the 2023 AFCON
  • He has the worst win percentage among coaches hired by the current GFA regime

Ghana are looking for another coach following Chris Hughton's sacking after a second consecutive group stage exit at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA), led by President Kurt Okraku, now in its fifth year, will hire the fifth coach after the last four failed to work.

The Black Stars are undergoing probably the worst spell in their history. After Hughton's sacking, fans called for the entire GFA leadership to quit.

Charles 'CK' Akonnor, Milovan Rajevac, Otto Addo, and Chris Hughton have coached the Black Stars in the last four years. Their stats are similar, but Hughton's win percentage is the worst. Here's how their stats compare.

Ghana coaches comparison

Charles 'CK' Akonnor - 2020-2021

Akonnor took over from Kwesi Appiah in January 2020, but a 1-0 defeat to South Africa in World Cup qualifying relieved him of his duties. The former Asante Kotoko Hearts of Oak manager lasted just 10 games. He won four, drew four and lost twice.

He spent much of his days in Europe, especially in Germany, where he captained Wolfsburg. he played 51 times for the Ghanaian national team, per Transfermarkt.

Milovan Rajevac (2021-2022)

Rajevac took over from Akonnor in September 2021 in his second stint. The Serbian led the Black Stars to the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. His first spell started in August 2008 but ended after the 2010 World Cup. He also led Ghana to the AFCON final in 2010 in Angola, where they lost 1-0 to Egypt.

His second stint was forgettable. He was Ghana's coach when they were beaten 3-2 by Comoros in the 2021 AFCON (held in 2022). The defeat saw Ghana exit the tournament at the group stage. He helped Ghana win their 2022 World Cup qualifying group but wasn't the coach when the Black Stars beat bitter rivals Nigeria in the playoffs.

Otto Addo (2022)

Addo was Rajevac's assistant but combined the role with his job as a coach at Borussia Dortmund. He was given a deal until December 2022, and he left after Ghana finished bottom of Group H at the World Cup.

Chris Hughton (2023-2024)

The final straw was Ghana's 2-2 draw with Mozambique at the 2023 AFCON. The Black Stars exited the competition at the group stage for the second time and are set to appoint another coach.

Ghanaian journalists abused Hughton following the shocking draw with the Southern African nation. However, most of the criticism on social media was directed at the GFA leadership. Okraku was re-elected as GFA President three months ago, so it remains to be seen if he will be forced out of his position. Here's how the four coaches compare, per Gary Al-Smith.

Chris Hughton says goodbye

Sports Brief earlier reported on Hughton saying his final goodbyes to Black Stars players and staff following his dismissal.

Hughton was spotted in Ghana's hotel chatting with Ghana staff and players as they exited.

The former Newcastle United and Brighton manager was tasked with righting the wrongs of the 2021 AFCON, but he didn't live up to those expectations.
