  • Chris Hughton's tenure as Ghana coach is over after almost one year
  • Hughton was dismissed after Ghana's elimination from the 2023 AFCON
  • The former Newcastle and Brighton manager was spotted saying goodbye

Chris Hughton was fired as Ghana's coach after their elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which was confirmed on Tuesday, January 23.

The former Brighton manager was spotted saying his final farewell to the Black Stars players and staff following a humiliating tournament in Ivory Coast.

After serving as a technical advisor the previous year, Hughton took over as Ghana's boss in February 2023. There were a lot of expectations for Hughton, but his tenure was not remarkable.

The Black Stars were knocked out of the competition in the group stage for the second time in a row. They were stunned by Cape Verde in their opening game, drew 2-2 against Egypt, and then blew a 2-0 lead against Mozambique in their final Group B game.

They will have to wait a bit longer for their fifth AFCON title. The good news is they can redeem themselves in the 2025 AFCON, and by qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Hughton says final goodbyes

On Wednesday morning, January 24, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced the sacking of Hughton and the entire technical team.

After the decision, Hughton was spotted in Ghana's hotel saying his final goodbye to the team as they left.

Ghana fans welcomed the decision to part ways with Hughton but feel the GFA, led by President Kurt Okraku, also needs to resign.

@Spamalord:

"The whole GFA staff should be relieved of their duties also. Everyone has to go so that we build from scratch."

@ShadrackAmonooC:

"DISSOLVE GFA!!
3 Coaches In 4 years, The Same Results!
JUST DISSOLVE GFA!!! 😬😬😬😬"

@AfcBanks_:

"It won't solve all of the problems. Even if a new manager comes in, it's still going to be the same problem. The GFA is the biggest problem for Ghana football."

Ghana defender apologizes to fans

Sports Brief earlier reported on defender Alexander Djiku apologizing to Ghana fans following the Black Stars' elimination from AFCON.

Despite the early elimination, the Fenerbache centre-back was one of Ghana's best players at the tournament in Cote d'Ivoire.

"Words will certainly not be enough to erase the disillusionment. We are disappointed and very sorry for our Ghanaian people that we have failed at this stage of the competition," he said on X.
