The Ghana Football Association (GFA) swiftly acted to relieve head coach Chris Hughton of his duties following the Black Stars' failure to qualify for the knockout round of the 2023 AFCON on Monday, January 22.

Ghana exit AFCON 2023

However, in a perplexing collapse within six minutes, the four-time African champions squandered their advantage, settling for a draw with the Mambas, Evening Standard reports.

This outcome left the West African giants with two points from three games, extending their winless streak at the biennial competition to six matches across two tournaments, ultimately leading to their elimination from the 34th edition.

The disappointing nature of the result, evident in the protest from some Ghanaian journalists, signalled inevitable changes, starting with head coach Chris Hughton, per ESPN.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) in response, made the decision to part ways with the 65-year-old tactician and his backroom staff as the renowned football powerhouse enters the market for a new coach.

Following the announcement of Hughton's departure in the early hours of Tuesday, fans expressed their satisfaction with the GFA's decision to remove the former Newcastle United manager.

How fans reacted to Hughton's sack

@Qwesi31, who did not hide his joy at Chris' sack, wrote:

"Good news all day, goodnight."

Another user, @IgbaraN, who appears to agree with @Qwesi31 added:

"Very good. How do you blow a lead twice? My sympathy goes to Mohammed Kudus. He deserved better from the team."

@OriginalObeng applauded the decision to sack Hughton:

"The best news I’ve come across today as a Ghanaian! The way to go!!"

@AMje200 suggested the ex-Brighton boss put Ghana in reverse mode:

"Took Ghana to league one level."

@codifiedloner, on the other hand, described the decision in one word:

"Good."
