AFCON 2023: Ahmed Musa Rates Nigeria Chances in Cote d’Ivoire
FootballKaizer Chiefs Are Nedbank Cup Contenders According to Amakhosi’s Botswana Captain
- Kaizer Chiefs are to be considered serious opposition in the 2024 Nedbank Cup
- Off-season signing Thatayaone Ditlhokwe claimed the Amakhosi are not written off
- Chiefs will play Motsepe Foundation Championship team Milford FC in the Round of 32
A fresh cup draw brings a new sense of optimism.
Kaizer Chiefs' pre-AFCON break form and the regenerative feeling around Cavin Johnson's tenure has an Amakhosi defender sensing silverware.
Signed from SuperSport United in July, Thatayaone Ditlhokwe believes Chiefs are possible frontrunners for the Nedbank Cup title.
Kaizer Chiefs last won the Nedbank Cup in 2013 and last made the final in 2019, where they were defeated by TS Galaxy.
Should their December league momentum continue after the AFCON break, the Amakhosi will certainly target the five cup-tie victories needed to end their nine-year wait to stand atop a podium.
Ditlhokwe stated when he joined Chiefs that he was aiming to win trophies and doubled down on that stance. The Botswana captain told FARPost:
"This is a process. We are patient about it, and we know it’s not yet over. I can assure you not to count us out.”
The 25-year-old defender has played 16 times for Chiefs since engineering a move to Naturena, but was not in the squad for their final four games of the year, as per TransferMarkt.
Chiefs are likely to take the same squad into the second half of the season as Cavin Johnson claimed he had not had sufficient time to assess the players.
Johnson is expected to see out the season as Chiefs continue to look for a replacement. The club rubbished claims that Pitso Mosimane had turned them down despite rumours he was bound for the Saudi Pro League.
