  • Saudi Arabia stunned Argentina in their opening game of the Qatar 2022 World Cup
  • The Saudis ended the eventual champions’ 36-game unbeaten run with a 2-1 victory
  • Lionel Scaloni's reaction in a car after their defeat has resurfaced for the first time

Argentina head coach, Lionel Scaloni has gone viral for his reaction to his team's loss to Saudi Arabia in their 2022 World Cup opener, over a year after the match.

The Falcons shocked the world when they came from behind to beat one of the competition’s favourites - La Albiceleste - in their opening World Cup game.

Lionel Messi gave the Copa America champions the lead from the penalty spot in the first half, but two quick goals in the second half saw the Saudis turn the game around.

Per Sport ES, the captain assured the fans the group wouldn't let them down and they stayed true to that promise, winning the trophy after beating the defending champions, France, in the final.

Scaloni's reaction after Saudi beat Argentina

It has been over a year, and some behind-the-scenes videos are still emerging from the tournament in Qatar. As shared by AlbicelesteTalk, Scaloni was seen at the back of a cab reacting to the game.

The visibly frustrated head coach was asking an unknown figure for an explanation for their defeat after he had questioned Nicolas Otamendi, who could also not provide answers.

The Argentina coach then acknowledged the impact the loss would have on the players and the fans, who kept on singing to cheer the players despite going behind astonishingly.

The former player was confident in his team's ability to compete if they recovered from the opening group-stage game loss, explaining he did not mean physical recovery but football recovery.

"Unfortunately, or fortunately, this happened. If this happened for good and we recover, then stay calm, we are going to compete, then be careful if we recover," he said.
"After receiving this blow, if we recover, then there will be no stopping us."

Scaloni then made a host of changes to the team, including bringing on Enzo Fernandez, Julian Alvarez, and Alexis Mac Allister, who all three contributed to the team's success.

Messi parties with Suarez in Miami

Sports Brief has also reported on Messi partying with Luis Suarez in Miami after the two reunited and played their first game together for Inter Miami against El Salvador.

Messi is still reaping the benefits of winning the 2022 World Cup and consecutive accolades, much to the annoyance of Cristiano Ronaldo, who discredited the awards.
