  • Senegal secured a place in the last 16 after winning their first two matches in Group C
  • Guinea are currently in second place with four points after beating Gambia on Friday
  • Cameroon still have a shot at advancing despite having just one point in the tournament

The second round of matches has been completed in Group C.

Senegal became the second team to qualify for the knockout stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after winning their first two matches against Gambia and Cameroon.

What do the other teams in Group C need to progress to the last 16?

AFCON 2023 Group C Permutations

After two matches for each team in Group C, there is a two-way battle between Cameroon and Guinea for second place and the final automatic qualification position.

Senegal currently hold the top spot with six points after beating Cameroon 3-1 on Friday.

They are not assured of first place in the group, though, with Guinea trailing them by just two points.

Guinea climbed to second place after beating The Gambia 1-0. Aguibou Camara starred in that contest, scoring the game's lone goal in the 69th minute, per the BBC.

The Teranga Lions only need a draw against Guinea in their final group match to secure first place in Group C.

That result will be beneficial to Syli National as well as that would seal their passage to the last 16 as the second-placed team in Group C.

Guinea will finish top of Group C if they beat the defending champions on Matchday 3.

The Indomitable Lions still have a shot at advancing to the round of 16 as the second-placed team in Group C. They are currently in third place with one point scored after their loss to Cameroon, per ESPN.

They will need to beat Gambia in their final group match and hope for Guinea to lose to Senegal.

Cameroon and Guinea will have four points each in such a scenario, with tie-breakers determining who will finish second in Group C.

A victory over Gambia may be enough for Cameroon to land a spot in the round of 16 even without the help of Senegal in the other match against Guinea.

The four best third-placed teams in the Africa Cup of Nations will secure spots in the knockout round. Having four points may be enough for the Indomitable Lions to seal their passage to the next round.

Gambia have not yet scored a point in this year's tournament, but they still have a shot of advancing to the last 16.

They will need to beat Cameroon and hope that two third-placed teams in the other groups fail to match their three-point total.
