  • El-Hadji Diouf has given thumps up to youngster Lamine Camara
  • Camara scored twice on his AFCON debut for the Teranga Lions
  • Senegal will next face Cameroon in their second group match

Senegal legend El-Hadji Diouf was the first to congratulate new sensation Lamine Camara following his Man of the Match performance for Senegal in their victory over Gambia.

The Africa Young Player of the Year netted a brace as the defending champions strolled to a 3-0 win in their opening Group C encounter at the Nations Cup in Cote d'Ivoire.

Camara doubled the Teranga Lions' lead after the break with a low finish before curling home the third late in the game. Papa Gueye had given Senegal an early lead before Ebou Adams of Gambia was sent off at the stroke of half-time for a foul on Camara.

In a video that has since gone viral on social media, Diouf was spotted congratulating the 20-year-old as they shared a heartwarming moment.

Camara, who plies his trade in France with Ligue 1 side, FC Metz, is enjoying an incredible 12 months, having led the U20 team to the U20 AFCON championship and was part of the successful CHAN side in 2023.

Meanwhile, Senegal will next face five-time champions Cameroon with hopes of earning quick progress to the second round of the competition, per Al Jazeera.

Camara stars as Senegal beat Gambia

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Lamine Camara scored twice as Senegal kicked off their Africa Cup of Nations title defence with a 3-0 victory over 10-man Gambia in Yamoussoukro on Monday.

Senegal moved top of the early Group C table ahead of Cameroon's game against Guinea later Monday.

Aliou Cisse's men showed enough quality in the Ivorian heat to suggest they could become the first team to win back-to-back AFCON titles since Egypt reeled off three in a row in 2006, 2008 and 2010.

Sports Brief also reported that youngster Lamine Camara was the star as Senegal strolled to a 3-0 win over neighbours The Gambia in the opening fixture of Group C.

The Teranga Lions came into the tournament as one of the favourites and hope to be the third side to retain their title after Cameroon in 2000 and 2002 and Egypt in 2006, 2008 and 2010.

It took four minutes into the first half before the Teranga Lions took the lead through Papa Gueye off an assist from star man and newly-married Sadio Mane.
