The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is well and truly underway. Nigeria were held to a frustrating draw by Equatorial Guinea in their opening match, while hosts Ivory Coast registered a 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau.

Speaking on SuperSport TV, the veteran tactician named a few favourites and then picked the team he expects to win the tournament.

“I expect Morocco to do very well t be honest. They’ve got no reason not to do well,” he said via iDiski Times.

He added that fans should be worried about the so-called small teams because they have players playing in some of Europe's best leagues.

"I still go with Senegal, I know the coach and because I know how tactically disciplined they are.”

Senegal have been tipped to defend their titles by many neutrals, but the Atlas Lions will be a dangerous opponent. Walid Regragui's side are the only African team to reach the semi-final of the World Cup.

They haven't won the AFCON since 1976 and will be looking to end the hoodoo, per BBC.

Meanwhile, Senegal's 2022 AFCON winning squad is still intact, so for now, they are the team to beat.

Kimanzi picks Senegal

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported that former Kenya coach Francis Kimanzi picked Senegal to win the tournament.

The veteran coach said Senegal's squad is still good, and they've added exciting young talent that complement the veterans well.

"I'm sticking with the defending champions, Senegal. They have an experienced squad, a squad that has been playing together, and they've integrated some of the young players into their Golden Generation. So I think Senegal can deliver another title," he exclusively told Sports Brief.

Mendy's message to Mane, Koulibaly

Sports Brief also reported on Senegal goalkeeper Eduoard Mendy urging his teammates Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly

According to Mendy, the only way to prove the Saudi Pro League is competitive is for him and his teammates to lead the Teranga Lions to another AFCON title.

"We have to make them proud and we have to show that we are not here for retirement like some people say. It is totally wrong," he added.
