Manchester City ace Kevin de Bruyne brilliantly broke down how he was able to pick up Oscar Bobb with one of the assists of the season against Newcastle United on Saturday, January 13.

De Bruyne was the hero of the day as his second-half cameo helped the Cityzens turn the game around from 2-1 to secure an emphatic 3-2 victory at St James’ Park.

With just his fifth touch, De Bruyne restored parity as he expertly passed the ball into the net from outside the box in a piece of play that left many wondering how he could deceive both the defenders and Magpies goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

As BBC reported, City pushed for a winner, with Newcastle resigning and sitting back to hold on for a point, but De Bruyne would break the home side’s hearts again in outrageous fashion.

In injury time, the 32-year-old midfield maestro got the ball in the attacking third and picked out 20-year-old Oscar Bobb with a neat lobbed pass. The Norwegian wiggled past the Dubravka before pinching the ball in the net to send Pep Guardiola into wild celebrations.

De Bruyne explains his assist

All factors considered, it was an incredible effort from De Bruyne.

After months out of action, it was quite impressive to see the Belgian still being able to command a game and directly impact the result.

Speaking to TNT Sport after his heroics, De Bruyne was asked whether his masterclass was down to his sharpness.

“I think it’s more willpower than sharpness,” he said.
“I know I’m not able to do that for 90 minutes at the moment but I know I can put in a shift for 20 to 25 minutes at full pace.”

He also broke down how he was able to pick out Bobb with his pass so effortlessly. According to De Bruyne, it was all down to Bobb’s run behind the defence.

“I look at his run. If he doesn’t run, I can’t pass the ball so he dictates what I can do and then I try to do my best and give him the ball,” he added.

What next for Manchester City?

City’s win over Newcastle took them to second place on the log, having played the same number of games as title rivals Liverpool and Arsenal.

Their next game is in the FA Cup, where they host Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth round on January 26.

Jadon Sancho assists in Dortmund return

Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported on Jadon Sancho’s assist in his first return to football in five months.

Sancho set up Marco Reus for Borussia Dortmund’s second goal against SV Darmstadt, and it came just 22 minutes after he came on as a substitute for Edin Terzic's side.
