The Bayer Leverkusen star was expected to spearhead the Super Eagles attack alongside Napoli superstar Victor Osimhen.

The German club announced on Monday, January 8, that the striker will be out for a few months after suffering an injury while in training with Nigeria.

"Victor Boniface suffered a muscle-tendon injury in the right adductor area. Our striker will undergo surgery in the coming days and is expected to be out of action until early April." 🤕

The injury comes at a crucial time for Leverkusen who are challenging for the Bundesliga title. They are on top of the league, and Boniface has been one of their stars in the 2023/24 season.

Awoniyi's message to Boniface

After the terrible news was confirmed, the Nottingham Forest striker took to X to send the best wishes to his compatriot, who is facing months on the sidelines.

My guy mafo……. We gallant for that green white green. We go again…..no one fit kill light.”

Awoniyi, just like Boniface, is missing the tournament through injury.

The Super Eagles will have to rely on African Footballer of the Year Victor Osimhen for the goals. Terem Moffi and Real Sociedad, star Umar Sadiq, will support the Napoli star up front.

Osimhen speaks on Nigeria's AFCON chances

Sports Brief earlier reported that Super Eagles of Nigeria forward Victor Osimhen gave his thoughts on Nigeria’s chances of winning the AFCON.

The Napoli star stated it was pivotal for the team to shift focus and seal the highly-coveted AFCON crown.

The 25-year-old is expected to spearhead Nigeria’s charge to the title during the course of the tournament. The Super Eagles are looking for their 4th AFCON title.
