Career

McBride's successful career started at the Greenbriar Elementary School, where he was drawn to football. He continued playing soccer at the Buffalo Grove High School, where he trained under John Erfort, his coach and English teacher.

Varsity football

In his junior year, McBride led his varsity team to the 1988 Illinois State Championship. Throughout his high school years, Brian was a versatile player who played and scored 80 goals as a defender and stopped four goals as a goalkeeper. One of the All-American's later endorsements included a deal with Nike that allowed his boyhood team to receive new uniforms every two years.

College football

His athletic abilities earned him a scholarship to Saint Louis University, where he played college football for the Billikens. The three-time Great Midwest Conference MVP won various awards, including two All-American honours and was named to an All-Conference first team.
