  • Kaizer Chiefs are experiencing another underwhelming football season 2023-24
  • The Johannesburg-based club have struggled to find the back of the net consistently
  • Coach Cavin Johnson has addressed talks surrounding his team’s need for a striker

Kaizer Chiefs have continued their season resurgence under the management of Cavin Johnson.

The Johannesburg-based club, initially plagued by a forgettable start to the Premier Soccer League season, is now on the upswing, with a series of victories propelling them to the sixth position in the PSL standings.

Nonetheless, amid the resurgence being witnessed by the Amakhosi, one issue that remains evident is the team’s struggle in front of goal.

Cavin Johnson’s side have only scored more than one goal in a game in one of their previous nine games, with Venezuelan midfielder Edson Castillo currently the club’s top goalscorer with five goals, according to data courtesy of Fotmob.

The team's inability to find the back of the net with consistency, which for many remains one of the critical factors to the Glamour Boys' struggle, has seen discussion about the need for a marquee goalscorer raised in the media.

However, Chiefs’ coach has responded to claims about his side needing a striker.

Cavin Johnson on Chiefs’ striker issue

Following his side's one-all draw against Sekhukhune United, the 65-year-old took time to address his team’s striker problem. Quoted by IDiskiTimes, he stressed:

"Everybody is going to ask me that question (laughs). Ranga scores today, Gonzalez tries his best.
The 10 points we got, and you look at where the goals are coming from, they are coming from all over the place.
I always say it doesn’t matter where the goals are coming from, as long as they come."

Johnson highlighted the significance of movement from the strikers, even if they are not the ones scoring the goals. He pointed out that the team's success in scoring is a result of the dynamic movements of the strikers, contributing to goals scored by others.

The coach's words seem to offer reassurance to striker Jasond Gonzalez, who has fallen short of the expectations set for him at the start of the campaign.

Looking ahead, Johnson hopes that his attackers can use the AFCON break to rediscover their goalscoring form before the PSL resumes in February.

Cavin Johnson explains why Chiefs 'struggled'

Sports Brief recently reported on Cavin Johnson's explanation of Kaizer Chiefs' early-season troubles.

Chiefs are still searching for a permanent manager but are getting positive results under their interim manager.

The Glamour Boys' recent good form in the league has paid off as they move to sixth on the DStv Premiership table.
