According to The Mirror, the sight of Van Persie taking his seat at the stadium sparked speculation he could reunite with the Red Devils as part of the overhaul plan expected under Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

However, the Dutchman has come out to explain that he was there purely for sentimental reasons and had nothing to do with a possible return to Old Trafford.

"Obviously, it was a bit of a coincidence that I’m here now with my wife and friends," Van Persie told MUTV.
"When I looked at the schedule I was like if I can pick that game, I will pick that game because of course our sort of shared memories we have against Villa. It was one of the most special nights personally as a Manchester United player. Villa is doing well this year so it’s a nice game to watch," he added.

How Man United vs Aston Villa ended

Meanwhile, United secured a 3-2 thrilling comeback win over Aston Villa, with Alejandro Garnacho inspiring the comeback.

Sky Sports reports that the hosts found themselves trailing by two goals at the break after set-piece goals from John McGinn and Leander Dendoncker.

Garnacho went on to pull one back for United in the 59th minute before he restored parity in the 71st minute.

Ramsus Hojlund scored the winner with nine minutes left on the clock to earn the home side a much needed win.
