  • Raphael Varane has fallen down the pecking order at Manchester United this season
  • Reports claim the Frenchman could rejoin Real Madrid ahead of the January window
  • Varane spent 10 years at Real Madrid, winning four Champions League titles at the club

Embattled Man United centre-back Raphael Varane has been linked with a surprise return to Real Madrid.

Varane quit the La Liga club in the summer of 2021 to join the Red Devils in a £34million deal.

While the Frenchman went on to form a formidable partnership with Lisandro Martinez, he has endured a frustrating spell in recent weeks.

Metro UK reports that the former France international has seen his involvement limited in the team since the start of the new season, sparking rumours of a possible fall out with Erik ten Hag.

According to the publication, Varane has managed just nine starts across competitions, with Harry Maguire, Johnny Evans, Victor Lindelof, and Luke Shaw currently ahead of him in the pecking order.

Varane linked with Real Madrid return

Reports now claim the centre-back could be on his way out of Old Trafford ahead of the January transfer window.

AS reports that Carlo Ancelotti is eager to reunite with Varane at Santiago Bernabeu to help him provide cover for David Alaba and Eder Militao, who are currently injured.

The 30-year-old is also understood to be open to rejoining Real Madrid to get his career back on track.

The Frenchman spent close to 10 years at the Spanish club between 2011 and 2021.

He won multiple titles during the period, including four Champions League titles and three La Liga honours.

Ten Hag's update on Sancho's future

Sports Brief reported on Erik ten Hag's update on Jadon Sancho's future ahead of United's 1-0 win over Burnley, claiming it depends on the English winger.

Sancho is currently having a beef with the manager after responding to his criticism with a public statement on social media. He was banished from the first team after refusing to apologise.

The winger has since been linked with a possible January exit.
