Big ambitions can be brought sharply into focus with the glory of hindsight.
Khama Billiat's decision not to renew his contract with Kaizer Chiefs at the end of last season is beginning to look like a failed gamble.
The Zimbabwean star has yet to secure a new club and risks fading into the background as the footballing circus moves on.
While his most recent move to secure employment elsewhere has yet to bear fruit, another monumental switch is said to be a source of unhappiness.
Billiat left Mamelodi Sundowns at what was arguably his peak, having won several trophies with Masandawana as they were beginning their all-conquering dominance of South African football.
The transfer to Chiefs five-and-a-half years ago is said to be a contentious one, with a SoccerLaduma source claiming the now 33-year-old was reluctant to do so. The source claimed:
"[He] had to be convinced to sign. He had other plans and wanted to leave for overseas. It was important that he be advised correctly and convinced to reconsider his decision. It was for his own good."
The once unstoppable playmaker has made 362 appearances for South African clubs, scoring 95 goals and providing 96 assists, as per Transfermarkt.
Cape Town City were in the running to sign Billiat recently but Goal reported the deal fell through as the player was holding out on an offer from abroad.
