In a list released on social media, former Real Madrid forward, Karim Benzema and Manchester City's treble-winning striker, Erling Haaland all made the nomination for the top award.

Osimhen made history last season after winning the Golden Boot in Serie A, becoming the first African to achieve this feat. He also led Napoli to their first league triumph in 33 years.

Meanwhile, his compatriot, Asisat Oshoala has been nominated for the Women's Footballer of the Year category following her accomplishments with Barcelona W last season, as reported by Guardian Nigeria.

Other categories to be contested for are:

Best Emerging Player, Best Goalkeeper, Best Midfielder, Best Coach, Best Club (men and women), Fans' Favourite Player, Best Agent, Best Club President, Best Sporting Director, Best Middle East Player, and Best Middle East Club.

Osimhen pays tribute to African legends

Sports Brief previously reported that Osimhen saluted the African football legends who played a role in shaping his career after winning the CAF Player of the Year award.

The Napoli and Nigeria star fended off competition from Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and Morocco's Achraf Hakimi in Marrakech, Morocco, to win the award for the first time.

Osmimhen has become the fifth player from his country to win the top CAF award, following in the footsteps of the legendary Rashidi Yekini and Emmanuel Amuneke.

Osimhen opens up on Napoli TikTok incident

Sports Brief also reported on Osimhen explaining the Napoli TikTok incident which saw him trolled in a viral video earlier in the season.

The Nigerian forward was mocked in a video shared on the platform after he missed an important penalty during the game against Udinese.

The video, which some claimed had a racist motive, was condemned by both Napoli and Osimhen, who called it an act by a 'stupid individual'.
