South Africa forward Percy Tau has been named the Interclub Player of the Year at the 2023 CAF Awards in Morocco.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion winger beat competition from DR Congo's Fiston Mayele and Mamelodi Sundowns forward Peter Shahalulile to win the award.

Tau enjoyed an outstanding season with the Red Devils, emerging as the player with the most goal contributions as Al-Ahly reclaimed the CAF Champions League.

The winger scored five goals and provided five assists in 12 matches in the CAF Champions League. He was also a key member of the team in the domestic league.

Tau will be expected to lead the club at the FIFA Club World Cup, which begins on December 12 in Saudi Arabia.

The tricky winger is expected to be part of the Bafana Bafana at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast next year.

Meanwhile, South African women's club, Mamelodi Sundowns have been crowned the female Club of the Year following their exploits at the CAF Women's Champions League.

Percy Tau remains favourite for CAF interclub Player of the Year

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the creme of the African football crop are pressing their evening wear for a celebration of African excellence, with December 11 pencilled in for the 2023 CAF Awards in Marrakesh.

Victor Osimhen, Achraf Hakimi and Mohamed Salah are up the most prestigious prize, with 13 other categories for the male and female nominees, respectively.

Among them is the Interclub Player of the Year, an award given to the best footballer plying their trade with an African club.

Yassine Bounou wins Best Goalkeeper award

Sports Brief also reported that Yassine Bounou has been named the 2023 Goalkeeper of the Year at the CAF Awards in his home country Morocco.

The Al-Hilal goalkeeper beat competition from Manchester United shot-stopper Andre Onana and Egypt legend Mohamed El Shenawy to scoop the award for the first time.

The Morocco goalkeeper enjoyed an outstanding year, winning the Europa League with Sevilla while leading the Atlas Lions to a historic semi-final berth at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
