The World Cup winner was appointed Leverkusen boss in October 2022, with the club sitting second from bottom in the Bundesliga. He steered them away from danger and helped them finish 6th in the table and the semi-finals of the Europa League.

This season, his Leverkusen side have made an even better start to the season. They are unbeaten after 14 Bundesliga games and sit top of the table ahead of giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

Following the red-hot form of his team, he has been tipped to leave, with clubs like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Liverpool reportedly interested, per 90min. He also recently signed a three-year deal with the club.

Alonso addresses exit rumours

Speaking with the Guardian, Alonso said he is not in a hurry to leave Leverkusen.

“It depends on if you want to be pushed to take other people’s decisions,” he says, “or if you want to make your own decisions. And so far I’ve been clear. I will take my own decisions when I feel it is the right moment for whatever. So that’s going to happen for sure.”

Alonso has been heavily linked with his former club, Real Madrid, who could be looking for a new coach if Carlo Ancelotti leaves.

The veteran Italian coach will reportedly take over the Brazilian national team, who have not had a coach since Tite resigned following the 20212 World Cup exit.
