According to the New York Times, he was among the highest-paid football players in the 70s, earning $2.8 million with the Cosmos. Other reports suggest that while playing for the New York Cosmos, he earned about $500,000 annually.

In 2016, a report emerged that the World Cup-winning player and coach received over $6 million between 2005 and 2006 from Oddset and Deutscher Fußball-Bund, the German Football Association. Questions arose challenging the payments as he served in the position on an honorary basis.

The Kaiser has faced a couple of fraud charges, one involving a €6.7 million ($7.2 million today) slush fund coupled with a $250,000 benefit to the Maltese Football Association for a favourable vote for Germany's 2006 World Cup hosting bid. While Beckenbauer denied the allegations, calling the payment a mistake, the Maltese Football Association president, Norman Darmanin Demajo, defended his organisation, saying,

In 2015, the German Football Association cleared Beckenbauer and the bid committee of any wrongdoing. The former centre-back who headed the committee formally addressed the allegations, saying,

"I never gave money to acquire votes so that Germany is awarded the 2006 World Cup. I am certain that no member of the bid committee did something like that."
