"After the Bayern Munich contract was signed, I was told that $250,000 had fallen from the sky into our bank account."

In 2015, the German Football Association cleared Beckenbauer and the bid committee of any wrongdoing. The former centre-back who headed the committee formally addressed the allegations, saying,

"I never gave money to acquire votes so that Germany is awarded the 2006 World Cup. I am certain that no member of the bid committee did something like that."
