Why is he called the Raumdeuter?

In 2011, Thomas Muller coined the term Raumdeuter to explain his unique role at Bayern Munich. The term translates to English as 'space interpreter' and explains his rare gift of spatial awareness and intuition. It is the ability to read the game in the right areas on the pitch and avoid defenders' attention, putting him two steps ahead of his opponents.

He also credits this gift to ample preparedness. Other players with this titular ability are probably Jose Callejon from Fiorentina and Delle Ali from Tottenham.

Career

Muller's youth career began at TSV Pahl when he was ten. Shortly after, he was spotted by Bayern Munich scout Jan Pienta and joined their youth academy. His senior debut was in August 2008 as a substitute in a match against Hamburger SV.

In 2009, Louis van Gaal was appointed as the new manager of Bayern Munich and became Muller's mentor. In March that year, he made his Champions League debut in the match against Sporting CP, substituting Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Muller represented Germany at various levels, starting with the under-16s in 2004, then the under-21s in 2009. His senior squad debut was in a friendly against Argentina in March 2010. His first international goal was at the 2010 FIFA World Cup against Australia.

Joachim Low axed him from the team, leading to a series of embarrassing losses until his reinstatement on 19 May 2021.
