One player whose name appears somewhat synonymous with the award is Lionel Messi. The mercurial Argentine has clinched the prize a record eight times, with the latest instalment being the 2023 edition of the award, as reported by Sky Sports.

As attention now shifts to the 2024 edition, Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann has revealed his pick for the award.

Griezmann on the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner

In an interview with media outlet Culto Futbol, the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner expressed his hope that his French teammate would be the recipient of the next Ballon d'Or.

“Player who will win the next Ballon d’Or? Hopefully, Kylian Mbappe.”

Griezmann's sentiments resonate widely across the footballing world, given he finished third in the most recent edition of the award. Nonetheless, Mbappe is anticipated to face tough competition from contenders like Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.

During the interview, Griezmann also outlined his aspirations for the current season with Atletico Madrid, emphasising his strong desire to win La Liga, a title he has not yet claimed.

The forward stated:

"I really want to win a La Liga because I've never won it. So, I'll do everything possible to be as high up as possible until we achieve it."

Griezmann opens up on target

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that France forward, Griezmann aspires to become significant for Atletico and a legend over the long term.

Despite a controversial return from Barcelona, the 32-year-old has acknowledged his struggle to regain the trust of the club's fan base.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup winner has contributed to 12 goals in the UCL and La Liga since the commencement of the 2023/24 season.
