  • The former striker says AmaKhosi are struggling because they have lost their identity
  • Following the recent sacking of Molefi Ntseki, Cavin Johnson was appointed to take over temporarily and a search for a permanent manager has been launched

Former striker Siphelele Mthembu has disclosed that Kaizer Chiefs have continued to struggle in recent times because they lost their identity.

Mthembu is one of the few players who featured for AmaKhosi and Orlando Pirates, but the star had his best spell with the Platinum Stars.

He starred under coach Cavin Johnson who guided the team to a second-place finish during the 2012/13 season as they qualified for the CAF Champions League.

Kaizer Chiefs have had many coaching changes in the last nine years since Stuart Baxter's first spell that lasted three years.

In a recent chat with iDiski Times, Mthembu explained why Chiefs keep struggling, lamenting the continued change of managers. He said:

“I think it’s not too hard to play for Chiefs but that pressure that comes from the top down [to the players], coaches want results quick and without creating a system or environment where you know what’s the culture and this is the type of playing Chiefs need most [for success].
“I think Pirates, Sundowns, SuperSport, they know what type of players they need, they know what their philosophy is. But if you keep changing coaches all the time, you lose the identity and DNA, because now you’re just [playing] finder-finder.
“It goes and rubs on the players, you don’t know what the coach wants. He wants results and that leads to players being in and out of the team. And then as a player, you lose confidence in yourself.”

Ribeiro delighted to join Sundowns

Sports Brief earlier reported that Brazilian-born star Lucas Ribeiro has been impressive since moving to South African side Mamelodi Sundowns during the summer.

The 25-year-old arrived at the Premier Soccer League side in July and has netted three goals in five league matches for the club.

The midfielder has disclosed that he had to search about the club on the internet before making a decision to move to the South African outfit.
