  • Manchester United lost to Manchester City in the Women’s Super League on Sunday
  • One of the goals they conceded came after a disastrous link-up by Le Tissier and Earps
  • City leapfrogged the previously unbeaten United in the league table with the victory

Manchester United’s calamitous ways have spread to the Women’s Super League.

They lost 3-1 to rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday in front of a record crowd.

One of the goals they conceded in the Manchester Derby was comical, sharing similarities to Harry Maguire and David de Gea’s traumatic backline link-ups in the past on the men’s side.

The costly blunder happened during the 55th minute with Manchester City leading 2-1.

United defender Maya Le Tissier delivered a poor back-pass to goalkeeper Mary Earps, who had to rush with her clearance with City forward Bunny Shaw charging in.

Unfortunately for Earps, her clearance went straight to the legs of Shaw. She unknowingly deflected the ball into the back of the open net to give City a 3-1 lead.

United lose for first time in WSL

It was a disappointing outcome for United, who had taken an early 1-0 advantage through a Katie Zelem penalty in the 21st minute.

City battled back, however, with Jill Roord and Lauren Hemp both scoring in a two-minute span to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

Shaw then doubled City’s advantage with her fortunate strike in the second half.

United were given a lifeline when City's Laia Aleixandri was given her marching orders for a second yellow card.

The Red Devils were unable to break down City’s defence even with the numerical advantage as they lost for the first time this season.

They dropped to fourth place with 12 points thus far this campaign.

City leapfrogged them into third place with 13 points after grabbing their fourth win of the season, per the BBC.

They trail leaders Chelsea by six points after Matchday 7. The Blues are the only remaining unbeaten team in the WSL.

Maguire emotional after United win

Sports Brief previously reported on Maguire winning the Man of the Match award in Manchester United's game against Sheffield United.

He was almost reduced to tears as he received the honour.

Maguire got back his place in the starting XI after nearly being sold to West Ham in the summer transfer window.
