Soweto Derby vs 'African Derby': Debate raging over the scheduling of big matches
FootballErnst Middendorp Returns to South African Football to Help Save Cape Town Spurs
- Ernst Middendorp has arrived back in South Africa to tackle a serious relegation battle
- The German will fight hard in an attempt to keep Cape Town Spurs in the DStv Premiership
- The Urban Warriors are at the foot of the table, eight points from Richards Bay and Royal AM
A foreign favourite has returned to take another shot at South African football.
Ernst Middendrop will be welcomed back to the southern tip of Africa as the new Head Coach of Cape Town Spurs.
South African legend, Shaun Bartlett received his marching orders several weeks back and Northern Irish Technical Director Sean Connor has been guiding the team in the interim.
The DStv Premiership strugglers will help Middendorp add another South African team to his resume.
His immediate task will be to keep the Urban Warriors in the league, which may be a harder task than winning a trophy.
Having just turned 65, Middendorp takes on a relegation battle with Spurs having secured only one win after 11 games.
The former Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows coach has two cup competition trophies under his belt, with victories in the earlier versions of the Nedbank Cup and MTN8
Brought in on the belief that he is a relegation saviour, Middendorp has proven such success when he spared Maritzburg United the drop in 2016.
The closest he has come to title glory is in 2020 when Kaizer Chiefs' title run was interrupted by the global health hysteria of that year.
All is not lost, as Spurs have shown signs of quality when given the right motivation. Unleashing Luke Baartman and ensuring the Spurs' is sharper, will earn him points.
Middendorp's first test will be against Royal AM before a regional derby against Stellenbosch FC, a marquee trip to Mamelodi Sundowns and a tough encounter with Amazulu.
