  • Mamelodi Sundowns won the inaugural African Football League with a win over Wydad Casablanca
  • Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates fans have likened the continental tournament to the Macufe Cup
  • Sundowns earned roughly R120 million from the AFL, far surpassing the CAF Champions League purse

Winning the biggest competitions allows fans to scream from the tallest mountains.

Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned continental champions after winning the inaugural African Football League (AFL) in front of a capacity Loftus Stadium.

Due to the AFL being an invitational tournament spearheaded by Sundowns owner, Patrice Motsepe, fans of the Soweto giants have queried the validity of the win.

The Macufe Cup is an annual exhibition tournament that coincides with an arts and culture festival in the Free State.

The prize money for the AFL was a staggering $ 4 million, with additional amounts for the earlier rounds. As highlighted by iDiskiTimes, Sundowns won $6.7m in total, roughly R120m.

Masandawana have been titled African champions but it has been pointed out that the eight-team AFL is not the CAF Champions League.

Xilonga-Mabye@Hasanicx posted on X:

"Correction, they are not African Champions. Please stop misleading our children, they are the African Football League Champions, a Macufe Cup that went to private school."

16v@MagabaKT had harsher sentiments, saying:

" 1. Celebrating a trophy that your Dad created for you is just desperate. 2. You failed to win Champions League and you created African Macufe Cup. Sies."

Sundowns fans have simply pointed out the perceived jealousy of dismissive fans.

Sundowns are due to begin their CAF Champions League group phase following the international window on November 24 when they welcome Mauritianinan champions, FC Nouadhibou.

Also in Bafana Ba Style's group are Egyptians Pyramids FC and fellow AFL invitees, TP Mazembe.
