Togo legend, Emmanuel Adebayor has finally broken his silence on his acrimonious relationship with Premier League side Arsenal.

The retired footballer left Arsenal to join Manchester City in 2009 despite being a key player for the Gunners.

Fans of the club were made to believe he left for money, with Manchester City spending big in that transfer window.

However, the 39-year-old, in a spill-it-all interview with talkSPORT, disclosed that he was 'abused' out of the club.

"When I left they released the story in front of the world saying I left for money. But that’s not the truth because then I could have gone to Barcelona, AC Milan, Inter Milan," he said.
"I refused all the offers to stay at Arsenal."

Adebayor was Arsenal's main target man before an injury ruled him out for several months. Following his return, he was denied the chance to fight for a position and had to leave in the summer of 2009.

"They actually blocked me walking into the training ground," he continued.
"I didn’t want to go but when I saw the interview that some of the Arsenal players were giving and people were abusing me as a bad footballer. Abusing my parents and calling my mum a w**** and my father washes elephant. At that moment, I had to give something back."

The Togolese forward's relationship with the Arsenal fans went from bad to worse following his celebration against his former club.

Adebayor made over 100 appearances for Arsenal, scoring 46 Premier League goals in three seasons, per Transfermarkt.

Adebayor on famous celebration against Arsenal

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Adebayor pleaded with Arsenal fans to forget his passionate celebration against them after he joined Manchester City.

Adebayor enjoyed a successful stint with the Gunners between 2006 and 2009 when he departed for City.

According to talkSPORT, the former Togo international was a fan favourite at the Emirates Stadium, thanks to his impressive goalscoring streak that saw him find the back of the net 62 times in 142 appearances.
