Arsenal fans are lamenting about an apparent “daylight robbery” after their team suffered their first defeat of the season to Newcastle United.

The Magpies claimed all three points at St James’ Park in a crunch Premier League encounter as Anthony Gordon scored a controversial goal in the 64th minute.

In truth, it was a scrappy goal that summed up the extremely tight nature of the game, as both teams felt like several decisions went against them.

Newcastle players were also incensed by the fact that Kai Havertz avoided a red card after dangerous play in the first half with a studs up challenge on Sean Longstaff.

Arsenal, on the other hand, wanted Bruno Guimaraes sent off after he appeared to elbow Jorginho.

But perhaps the most controversial call in the game was to award Newcastle their goal, when it looked like the ball had gone out of play in the build-up.

As reported on BBC, there were extraordinary scenes as the VAR checked for three possible factors that could have ruled out Gordon’s goal – a foul, an offside and the ball possibly having gone out of play in the build-up.

Arsenal could not get back in the game, as Newcastle took all three points to move to sixth on the log. On social media, Gunners fans were ungovernable.

Here are some of the reactions from fans:

"Once again, VAR is costing Arsenal games. There were a million reasons to overturn the goal. But Arsenal isn’t Man City."

@therealdaddymo1 added:

"A total shambles by the referee and the VAR officials today. A disgrace of the highest order."

@Maliqifeoluwa said:

"The PGMOL is fraudulent and I feel they are given a script before a new game."

@ObiefunaOnyinye declared:

"We were robbed."
