Golden Arrows ended their losing streak against Cape Town City when it mattered most.

A tight first half ended 1-1, but Arrows showed superior hunger in the second half to win the last 16 clash 3-1.

The result hinged on a penalty given three minutes into the second half when Nduduzo Sibiya's shot glanced the hand of a City defender.

Tebogo Tlolane opened the scoring when he cut in from the right flank and, unchallenged, unleashed a left-footed thunderbolt.

Cape Town City equalised 10 minutes before halftime through neat interplay around the edge of the box.

Tahir Goedeman found himself in acres and with Brad Cross criminally playing him onside, slotted past the goalkeeper.

Three minutes into the second half, captain Sibiya tried to curl one into the top corner, and in doing so found the arm of the defender. The shot still hit the crossbar but the referee pointed to the spot.

Sibiya slotted home and 10 minutes, Knox Mutizwa made it three with a powerful tap-in at the back post following a smooth counterattack.

Eric Tinkler expressed his frustration at his team not being awarded a penalty of their own, saying after the match:

"As coaches, it is hard to accept. As a ref, you can't choose which one you want to give. Am I happy with the performance of the team? No. Collectively we didn't do enough."

A happy Arrows coach, Mabuti Khanyeza said:

"We give the credit to the boys, they worked very hard. We watched so many previous games with the players so we knew what was coming. I told them at half-time to believe and we managed to score two goals."
