  • Harry Maguire scored the winning goal for Manchester United against Copenhagen
  • Andre Onana saved a last-minute penalty to preserve the lead after Scott McTominay's foul
  • Former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil sent applause to both players after their heroics

Harry Maguire and Andre Onana are the rave of the moment and are receiving applause from the football world after their heroics for Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League.

Manchester United desperately needed a win against Copenhagen after losing their opening Champions League games against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.

The Danish champions took control for most of the game and would only have themselves to blame for not taking their opportunity as they let their dominance go for nothing.

Per Reuters, Maguire and Onana won it for the Red Devils with a goal and a last-minute penalty save to retain their hopes of progression to the knockout stages.

Ozil applauds Maguire and Onana

The two players have faced heavy criticisms recently over their performances, with the English defender losing his captaincy while the African goalie struggled to adapt.

After their heroics, former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil took to social media and praised the two players:

"Harry Maguire & Andre Onana deserve that - silencing their haters 🤫"

Despite the two player's efforts, Christian Eriksen was named UEFA MOTM, having assisted Maguire's goal and was influential in gaining control of the game for United when he came on for Sofyan Amrabat in the second half.

Fans sing Maguire's name

As noted by TNT Sports, fans were singing Maguire's name during his post-match pitchside interview alongside the Cameroonian goalkeeper, and the England international responded.

"It is amazing. When you are not on your game, it gets picked up, but I am really proud and pleased how I have acted over these six to 12 months. I have been given an opportunity, and I want to help the team and get the club back to where it should be," he said.

Maguire moved to tears

Sports Brief reported that Maguire was moved to tears after winning the Premier League man of the match in United's 2-1 win over newly promoted Sheffield United.

The Englishman put in a solid shift defensively to help the Red Devils combat a surprisingly strong Blades side. He was awarded the MOTM and got a bit emotional.
