FootballPSG Rejected Manchester United’s Offer for Current RB Leipzig Forward Over Contract Clause: Report
- Manchester United had shown interest in securing the services of Xavi Simons, the forward from PSG
- The Dutch forward is currently on loan at German Bundesliga giant RB Leipzig
- A report has surfaced detailing Manchester United’s unsuccessful pursuit of the young forward
The summer transfer window had Premier League giants Manchester United prioritise a long list of high-profile signings.
While Erik Ten Haag’s team managed to secure several new additions, such as goalkeeper Andre Onana and a last-minute swoop for Sofyan Amrabat, they missed out on a few other key players.
Notably, they failed to secure the services of former Tottenham striker Harry Kane, who eventually joined the Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and PSG’s promising young forward, Xavi Simons.
The pursuit of Harry Kane was undoubtedly a challenging endeavour, but the reasons behind Manchester United’s inability to acquire Dutch prodigy Xavi Simons have also been revealed.
Why Man United missed out on Simons
According to reports by Goal, PSG activated a buy-back option for Simons, amounting to €6 million, after he had an outstanding season with Eredivisie club PSV Eindhoven.
Despite being likened to possessing qualities reminiscent of both Neymar Jr. and Kylian Mbappe, Simons was considered surplus to requirements at the French club.
Consequently, a loan move was deemed the best option to provide the budding star with more playing time.
A report from the French outlet L’Equipe indicates that Manchester United expressed a keen interest in signing Simons. However, their bid for the forward was rejected due to a clause in his previous PSV contract.
This clause stipulated that if Simons was sold before a specific date, which had not yet been reached, PSV would be entitled to the transfer fee, not PSG.
As a result, Les Parisiens ultimately settled for a loan transfer for the young forward, with RB Leipzig emerging as the preferred destination for Simons to continue his unimpeded development.
